Why are softboards perfect for learning to surf?

Surfing is an exhilarating yet demanding sport, and choosing the right board can make all the difference for a beginner. Among the various options available, softboards are by far the best for those taking their first steps on the waves. Comfort, safety, ease of learning... Here's why softboards are the best option for getting started in surfing.

1. What is a softboard?

A softboard, or foam board, is a surfboard covered with a layer of soft foam (EVA), with an EPS core, which distinguishes it from traditional resin and fiberglass boards. Designed to offer maximum stability and safety, it is particularly popular with beginners and surf schools.

2. The advantages of softboards for beginners

2.1 Increased security

Softboards are made from flexible materials that reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. Unlike rigid boards, they absorb shocks better and limit the risk of cuts or bruises.

2.2 Improved buoyancy and stability

A softboard has generous volume and is wider than resin boards. Foam is also a more expansive material, so for a given volume, there is more buoyancy than with any other construction. This makes it easier for beginners to stand up and better manage their balance on the waves.

2.3 Easy to paddle and catch waves

The increased buoyancy of softboards makes paddling easier and allows you to catch waves more easily, which is essential for quick and motivating learning. The goal of surfing is to have the right equipment so that you can start enjoying yourself as quickly as possible, but it's important to remember that surfing is a difficult sport and the learning curve can be steep.

2.4 A more affordable price

Softboards are generally less expensive than hardboards, making them an ideal choice for beginners who don't want to invest too much money right from the start. They are also easier to resell and therefore depreciate less than fiberglass and resin boards.

2.5 Uncompromising durability

Unlike traditional boards, which can crack or become damaged upon impact, softboards are more resistant and require less maintenance. Their foam construction allows them to absorb most shocks without causing structural damage. This also makes them easier to resell in the long term. This makes them the ideal board for family use!

3. How to choose the right softboard?

3.1 The size of the board

  • Large softboards (7'0 – 9'0): Perfect for beginners as they offer greater stability. You just need to choose the length of the board according to your size, see: https://www.prism-surfboards.com/guide-achat-planche-de-surf-debutant/
  • Intermediate softboards (6'0 – 7'0): Ideal for those who already have some basic skills and want to start turning more easily.
  • Small softboards (5'0 – 6'0): Reserved for surfers who already have good control.

3.2 Shape and volume

Choose a board with a wide nose (front) and a rounded tail (back) to maximize stability and maneuverability.

3.3 Types of abuses

Softboards often have flexible or removable fins to prevent injury! The advantage of PRISM softboards is that we use fin boxes that are compatible with the FCS 1 and 2 systems! In other words, if you break a fin, you can find a replacement in any surf shop. What's more, you can easily adapt the fins to suit your level, your surfing style, or the conditions you want to surf in!

4. The limitations of softboards

Although softboards are perfect for learning, they also have some disadvantages:

  • Lower performance: A softboard is more difficult to maneuver and slower than a hardboard.
  • Lack of responsiveness: It is less suited to tight turns and technical maneuvers.
  • Using a soft material on the deck will absorb some of the support and you will lose power. However, this is compensated for on PRISM softboards with the use of a double stringer, which stiffens the board lengthwise and restores pop during maneuvers.

However, these limitations are largely offset by their advantages for beginners.

5. Conclusion: Softboards are the best way to get started

If you are just starting out in surfing, investing in a softboard is an excellent choice. Safety, stability, ease of learning, and affordability make it an ideal option for progressing quickly and confidently.
