Prism vs Olaian (Decathlon)

Which foam surfboard should you choose? We've put the two ranges side by side to help you decide.

Prism
Surfing specialist
VS
Olaian
Decathlon

When looking for your first surfboard, the reflex is often the same: head to Decathlon. The store is ten minutes away from everyone's home, prices are clearly displayed, and the Olaian range occupies an entire aisle in the water sports section. It's the default choice — a bit like buying your first running shoes at Decathlon before turning to a specialist when you get serious about it.

Except that when it comes to surfing, this logic has a hidden cost. Surfers who buy from Decathlon often end up buying a new board a year or two later because the first one has worn out. And then they say to themselves, "I should have spent a little more from the start."

That's exactly why we created the Starter Series range at Prism: to offer a real foam surfboard, designed by surfers, at a price that remains affordable—and above all, that lasts. Rather than asking you to take our word for it, we've put the two ranges side by side.

Olaian by Decathlon: what you get (and what you don't get)

Olaian is Decathlon's surf brand. The name comes from Basque—OLA (wave) and IAN (inside)—and the design team is based in Hendaye, in the Basque Country. As for credibility, no worries: the people who design the boards actually surf.

The three ranges

Entry level

100 series

~180 €

Basic, without fiberglass reinforcement. Flexible fins and leash included. The bare minimum to try surfing.

The most popular

500 Series

$160–$230

Denser foam, greater rigidity. From 6'0 to 8'6". The default choice for most beginners.

High-end

900 Series

$200–$320

Carbon stringer, Future Fins boxes. Tested by Surf Session: responsive and versatile.

Let's face it: the entry price is low. A board for €160 with leash and fins included, ready to surf as soon as you leave the store—on paper, it's attractive. Immediate availability in more than 300 stores in France and a 365-day return policy are also concrete arguments. But a low price does not necessarily mean good value for money.

Limitations to be aware of

  • UV sensitivity — The foam discolors and delaminates if left in the sun. Surfers report problems after just one intensive season.
  • Non-reinforced construction (100 and 500 ranges) — Beyond 30 sessions/year, the foam collapses and rigidity decreases. May need to be replaced the following year.
  • General advice — A Decathlon salesperson covers all departments. It can be difficult to get specific advice on the ideal volume for your size and spot.

Prism Surfboards: what the specialist offers

Prism is an independent French brand. No chain of stores across the country, no massive advertising budget—but a catalog entirely designed by surfers, for surfers. Sales are made directly from the website, without intermediaries, plus a showroom near Nantes.

★★★★★ 9.8/10 — 700+ verified reviews

The Starter Series range

11 sizes available, from 6'0 to 9'0 — significantly more than at Decathlon. There is also a Pink Series (7'0, 7'6, 8'0) and beginner packs with cover and leash included. Prices range from €249 for the 6'0 to €389 for the 9'0.

What's changing in construction

🛡️

Hydrophobic EPS foam

High density, does not absorb water in the event of impact. Unlike standard Decathlon foam.

🎋

Bamboo stringers

Naturally flexible and virtually unbreakable. Superior elasticity compared to plastic or rigid wood.

💧

Waterproof plugs

Sealed wing boxes that prevent water infiltration through the fasteners.

The Prism progression path

The major advantage of a specialized brand: at Decathlon, if you progress beyond foam, you will have to change brands. At Prism, the catalog continues.

Price: the real comparison

Size Olaian 500 Prism Starter Difference
6'0 160 € 249 € +89 €
7'0 180 € 289 € +109 €
7'8 200 € 389 € +189 €
8'0 329 €
8'6 230 € 439 € +209 €

The difference is real. But put into context: an Olaian 500 at $200 that lasts a season and a half, then replaced = $360 over three years. A Prism Starter at $350 that lasts three seasons = $350. And you surf better during all that time .

A Prism beginner's pack(board + leash + cover) starts at €288. Based on the number of sessions, the Prism is the most affordable option.

When is an Olaian sufficient?

Let's be honest: there is one scenario where an Olaian does the job. You're going on vacation next week, you want to try surfing once to see what it's like, and you're not at all sure you'll ever set foot in the water again. At €160, it's a no-obligation entry ticket.

Outside of this very specific scenario, we sincerely believe that you would be better off investing a little more in a board that will really help you improve.

Why Prism is the best choice for most surfers

🏄
You want to continue. A few lessons, vacation rentals, and surfing will become a regular activity. The €60 to €100 difference is recouped by the second season.
💪
You surf more than 20 times a year.At this rate, an Olaian 500 will quickly show its limits. The reinforced construction of the Starter Series can withstand intensive use without breaking down.
📐
You have an atypical build. Very tall, very heavy, very light — 11 sizes available compared to 5-6 at Decathlon.
📈
You want to progress.Starter → Essential → Original → Performance. All without changing brands.
📞
You need real advice. Call Prism. Someone who surfs and knows every board in the catalog will answer your call.

Our verdict

Decathlon has democratized surfing—but democratizing does not mean offering the best product. For a few dozen euros more, Prism offers a board that you keep, not throw away.

Superior construction, twice as many sizes to choose from, genuine support from surfers, and the opportunity to progress within the same brand.

If you're reading this article, it means you're already seriously researching. And someone who is seriously researching deserves better than a large-surface board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Decathlon or Prism for your first surfboard?

Even for a first board, we recommend the Prism Starter Series. For €60 to €100 more than an Olaian 500, you get a board that will last three times longer and help you progress faster thanks to its greater rigidity. The only case where an Olaian is justified is if you're really not sure you'll take up surfing again—but in that case, you might as well rent a board from a school rather than buy one.

Are Olaian boards sturdy?

The 100 series is fragile and intended for very occasional use. The 500 series is suitable for moderate use (less than 30 sessions/year) but shows signs of wear after 2-3 seasons. The 900 series is significantly more advanced, with a carbon stringer and Futures boxes.

Why buy from a specialist rather than a big box store?

Because a surfboard is not a soccer ball. It is a technical investment that depends on your size, your level, and your surfing conditions. A specialist like Prism offers you superior construction, a choice of suitable sizes, genuine advice over the phone from surfers, and a complete range to support you. Decathlon offers a price, Prism offers a surfing experience.
